Building A Website

The Why

So why am I building a website? I don't have a "audience", I don't have a company or any real benefit to having a website.

It seems since Web 2.0, we've surrendered our little part of the web to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. Obviously there is nothing wrong with signing up to a service and posting away, but I feel something is lost. So here we are!

The How

You would think this would be straight forward, but like the typical developer I had to play it on hard mode.

The Template

I started off with a cheeky google in the hopes of finding a half decent html template. There were loads to choose from, but I found editing the template to what I wanted was a complete pain. On top of that I decided to wanted to blog half way through to document my successes and failures (my many many failures). So that was quickly dropped.

The Hugo

I really didn't want to go the route of a CMS, I was more comfortable in a text editor than I was in a UI. Hugo was the perfect option. I installed Hugo, found a template I really liked and edited away. I had a sleek looking website with a blogging system built in within minutes. After a while I did run into some issues with configuration and working with the templating engine. Made worst with the template I was using having their own "way" of doing things.

The CRM

A buddy name dropped "ghost" as his go to CMS. I decided to give it a try and it's honestly what I was looking for. I've used WordPress, Joomla and others in the past. But they all seemed soo clunky and over complicated for what I needed. Ghost has a simple UI, great templates so all you're left with is high level configuration and a UI to write content.

The Lesson

Maybe starting off asking the bois bois bois for recommendations
